High Definition DVD Formats

so. let me get this straight — you want to pay $200 more for a console with games that look the same because it plays a movie format that looks the same with similar features but has 2/3 the titles?

cheapest blu-ray player on amazon?

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player
Price: $714.99
Sales rank: 2044
Rating: 2.5 stars

cheapest hd-dvd player on amazon?

Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD PLAYER
Price: $438.88
Sales rank: 405
Rating: 4.5 stars

notice the sales rank part?  and the ratings?  yeah. the people are speaking with their wallets, guys. the “format war” is already on its way out. you know why those “average third party” sales are lower for blu-ray? used discs.

jeezus, but the ps3 is looking like a stupid proposition.

More crap from Sony is exacting a significant downward pressure on the PS3’s adoption, for sure. But! The titles run the game, and will ultimately make or break the system. Give us something incredible that we can’t get anywhere else and we might conveniently forget about Blu-ray versus HD-DVD (or the zillion other things that might be wrong with the PS3).

I’ll be waiting at least six to twelve months before I even consider such an extravagant purchase. To me, I want to see the games first, and so far, there’s no incentive there either.

“I’ll be waiting at least six to twelve months before I even consider such an extravagant purchase.”

that’s pretty much what everyone* i know who wants a ps3 is saying. the bummer with that is who’s going to buy one in the meantime? you can’t recover from a year of flat sales in such an aggressive market.

and, once you fall behind, you’re left behind. publishers won’t push anything but ports your direction.

they need a game that’s a $600 system seller. an exclusive game. and, in order for that to get made, they are going to have to subsidize it. note the recent rumblings from publishers like namco and ea.

and, like i said, it has to sell a $600 system. it has to be wii-sports-fun and gears-of-war-gorgeous or it’s just not gonna happen.

i’ve said it a bunch before — sony fucked itself by trying to push blu-ray. it worked for dvd and the ps2 because dvd players had already been out for 3 or 4 years. the ps3 doesn’t have that luxury with dvd.

and, i find it continuously funny that sony fans use dvd as an example why sony will prevail in the “war.”

    * by “everyone,” i mean my hardcore friends. my mainstream friends just laugh when we play the fun “so you want one?” game. i ask them how much they think it is. they have various responses, all between $200 and $300 dollars. and then, they laugh even harder when i explain how, after 40% price drops across the board in 3 years, the ps3 will still be $300+ dollars. it is, and always will be, almost twice the price of the other consoles.

You know, I’d really like to hear from someone who has one. Is it solid? Are the games good? Are they happy with their investment?

yeah. me too. tho. we won’t get any legitimate opinions until they break 1 million units. that’s about when the freaks already have theirs and regular people can start buying them.

i’m sure as hell not spending $600 on one. tho. i’ve been saying that for a year now.

a wii tho? i’m hoping for one for christmas. could you pass the hint along to my wife?
